Qi Gong in Late Summer
Pausing to acknowledge the Earth Element
In Taoism, Late Summer is recognized as a distinct season occurring around the middle of August. It marks the transition between Summer's expansive, outward-moving yang energy of the Fire element and Autumn's quieter, inward-moving yin energy of the Metal element. Associated with the Earth element, this mystical 5th season is a time for pausing, celebrating, grounding, integration, and nourishment.
What is your own Earth center calling for?
In this 4th of our Taoist seasonal workshops, we invite you to slow down and enter the nourishing embrace of Late Summer, the season of the Earth element.
Together we will:
Move through gentle Qi Gong warm-ups and flowing practices that invite the Earth element’s gifts of grounding, nourishment, and harmony to awaken within us.
• Through connecting with the stomach and spleen — the Earth element organs and meridians of receiving, transforming, and sustaining life—we soften patterns of worry and overthinking, returning to a calm and centered place of trust.
• From this rooted foundation, we cultivate patience, generosity, grounded strength, and the capacity for meeting each moment with openness, curiosity, and a playful, nurturing connection to ourselves, each other, and the ever-changing dance of life.
What to Expect:
Introduction to Taoist 5 Element philosophy, medicine, & Qigong with their rich storehouse of healing & longevity practices
Guided movement exercises including breath work, stretching, & flow sequences for health & vitality which relate specifically to the Late Summer season
Experience the circulation of Qi (life force energy) in your meridians and primary energy centers to ignite circulation, enhancing your ability to be present in the moment while connecting wholeheartedly to self and others
Practice of the Healing Sounds and Inner Smile meditation to help us let go of the past and cultivate loving kindness and compassion for ourselves and others
Qigong comes from ancient traditions bringing a relatable workout for modern times that is deeply relaxing while enjoyable to practice. It tonifies & strengthens the whole human system with a kind of down-to-earth practicality that is in full partnership balance with the heavens above.
Please bring:
A yoga mat to stand on (there are some here available for use)
A water bottle
Journaling material, if desired
Comfortable clothes that are easy to move in
A not-too-full belly (same as in yoga)
Meet Dea
Deanna “Dea,” a native Montanan, is a retired hospice RN who while working decades in community end of life care, also earned her MAc in Classical Five Element Acupuncture. She has been a student of the internal arts & wisdom traditions since her teenage years growing up on the south side of Missoula.
She now teaches Holden style QiGong specializing in embodied movement for healthy aging, healing and enlivened wellbeing and welcomes people from all walks of life & in any health condition to practice.
Asked why she teaches, her reply will be with a quote from the diaries of Etty Hillesum’s, An Interrupted Life. “Why is there a war? Because I and my neighbor and everyone else do not have enough love. Yet we could fight war and all its excrescences by releasing, each day, the love that is shackled inside us, and giving it a chance to live.”
This is the quintessential nature of a good Qi Gong practice.
